Angels Among Us

Introduction

It was a cloudless night and stars were twinkling before my eyes as I gazed into the peaceful night. I could smell the fresh honeysuckle flowers as we rumbled down the old dirt road. The dust was kicking up into the bed of Dad’s old 1949 Chevy pickup from the holes in the fender and were rolling over into where I was sitting at in the bed of the truck.

The dust bites at your nose slightly, almost like the smoke of the old coal burning stove at Granny’s but much gentler. The frogs were chirping from the creek that ran along the old road. In spots along the road it was almost deafening.

The headlights in the truck were dancing up and down. The headlights rattled out of place in their socket, sometimes shining in the road and sometimes toward the creek. The night was so bright from the full moon and I could see for a quarter mile behind the truck behind us.

The Witnesses

Dad was in the front seat driving and a neighbor friend who Dad had known for years was riding in the passenger seat. His name was J. C. I can remember him being Dad’s friend from the time I was a small boy. He wore the thick glasses that made your eyes look huge when you looked at him. J.C. was a talker and was never lacking for words or conversation. His hair was gray although he was young. I always thought it was because he was light skinned and light haired.

Dad was a fairly big man like all my uncles on Dad’s side. He stood a bit over six feet. His dark hair was always combed back like Elvis and pinned in place with Vitalis hair oil. The big “Flip” was always present in his hair. It rolled back from his forehead and swept back in a roll before it lay back down on the top of his head.

I always wondered why he would go through all the trouble to bathe and wash his hair a couple times and then soak it down with the hair oil. My dad would always whistle quietly all the time seems like. The whistling always came from the left side of his mouth. I supposed he gave a better tone that way.

The Discussion

I could hear Dad and J C talking up a storm about some coal mine that could be started here or there. J C would comment how this needed built and that needed fixed. As the conversations were going on I was just staring out at the sky.

I could hear all their words and talk coming from the open windows of the truck. I would stare up at the sky and watch the stars following our every move. The farther we drove the more closely they followed. It was as if they were attached to Dad’s old beat up pickup. It gave the appearance that we were dragging them along with some unseen rope.

The Encounter

I gazed at the stars for a long time before something caught my eye. It was in the form of a perfect sketching of an Angel. The wings were outspread and were thin as if made from lace. The face of the Angel, even though it was ghost like, had the perfect facial features. The nose was perfectly shaped. Both eyes were in the exact spot they should be and you could even see the pupils in the apparition.

I got that scary feeling you get when you are in a life or death situation once I saw this. The blood was slowing falling as hot wax. The sensation came first through my belly and then gradually all the way down to my feet. My head became hot and I could feel my face became blushed and hot as if hot water had been poured on me.

I sprang from my sitting position and smacked the side of the truck door. Alerting Dad to what I was witnessing he called back”What is it”. “Look up there in the sky” I exclaimed. “Over there toward that tree sticking up” I called back. It was about a minute before Dad slowed downed. He eventually stopped along the old secluded road. Dad and J. C. both came out of the truck and stood there and looked.

The scared feeling left as I knew Dad was there now. We all stood there and watched in amazement as the apparition stayed for a long, long time. I listened as the grown ups tried to explain what they were seeing and what would have caused it. Both of them were never scared of anything and neither believed in ghosts.

Conclusion to ANGELS AMONG US

After about an hour we loaded up and I was happy to ride between them in the front seat. That was the closest I have ever come to seeing an angel that night. And I have never seen one since. It was a calming feeling after that.
