Solomon Royse

Solomon Royse, a private in the Maryland line during the Revolution, was a pensioner in later years. He was born 11 September 1763 in Orange County, New York, and resided in Washington County, Maryland at the time of enlistment. He resided there after service, then to Hampshire County, Viriginia, and, in 1792, moved to Bourbon County, Kentucky. Soon he moved to Green, now Adair County, in 1796 or 1798.

Solomon married Sarah Stotts on 3 November 1796 in Green County. He died on 14 April 1858 in Adair County, leaving his widow, Sarah, who made pension application [W3598] on 29 October 1858 from Adair County, at the age of 87.

Solomon was listed on the 1840 Adair County pensioners list, age 76. Solomon and his children were often referred to as “Rice” in the public record. He was bondsman for John Stotts, constable of Adair, in June 1802.

1) Malinda, married John Milton Yates in Adair 13 February 1828, attest Hiram Royse;

William

2) William, a farmer, born about 1799 in Green County, married Mary Stone, born about 1807 in Virginia, daughter of Manoah Stone; they married in Adair 24 February 1825. William’s name on the minister’s return is “Rise”;

Solomon Royse made a deed of gift to son William in February 1820: “…my son William Royse has undertaken to support myself and wife during our natural lives and also to pay the usual price for schooling my young children…”

William’s issue included:

A) Elizabeth, married John Blair in Adair in 1844;

B) Manoah W., a farmer, born about 1830 in Adair, married Eliza Susan Strange, married 24 March 1852 in Adair—Manoah married second Sarah Young on 14 January 1866 in Adair, and had issue including:

(C) John R., a farmer, born about 1832 in Adair, married Martha F. Breeding, daughter of R.M. Breeding, on 8 September 1868 in Adair;

(D) Albert, born about 1834;

i) Sarah E., born about 1854 in Adair;

ii) Mary, born about 1855 Adair;

iii) George V., born about 1857 Adair;

iv) William C., born 1860 Adair;

(E) Sarah Charlotte, born about 1836, married Noah G. Turk in Adair, bond dated 6 March 1854;

F) V. [male], born about 1838;

G) Amanda M., born about 1840 Adair, married Charles H. Royse 25 February 1869 in Adair, after the death of her sister Emily;

H) Emily P., born about 1842 Adair, married Charles H. English 18 December 1866 in Adair;

I) Sherrod H., born about 1844 Adair;

J) Cornelia K., born about 1846 Adair;

K) Martha M., born about 1849 Adair, married John M. Patterson, son of Silas B. Patterson, married in Adair 8 September 1868; L)

3) Hiram, son of Solomon, a farmer, born about 1801, married Jane Wheeler, born about 1818, married 6 September 1843 in Adair, and had issue including:

(A) Had issue Franklin P., born about 1853 Adair.

B) Ann Prior, born about 1843; B) George A., born about 1844;

C) H.T. [male], born about 1848;

D) Sarah Victoria, born 6 August 1849/50, died 22 December 1884 Burkesville, KY, married J.C. Yates 13 October 1872, had issue—one son and two daughters;

E) Mary B., born about 1853;

F) Thomas A., born about 1856;

G) Frank T., born about 1859. Hiram “Rice” was recorded in the 1870 Metcalfe County census.

John

4) John, son of Solomon, a farmer, born about 1806, died about 1864, married Elizabeth, born about 1806, died before 1866, had issue including:

A) William, born about 1833;

B) Felix G., farmer, born about 1835 in Adair, married Nancy A. “Nannie” Conover 4 July 1858 in Adair;

C) James D., born about 1836, married Zerilda Robertson 23 May 1863 in Adair;

D) Mary Ann, born about 1838, married Stephen R. Conover 30 June 1857 in Adair;

E) Solomon W., born about 1839, married Nellie M. Tupman 8 October 1863 in Adair;

F) Benjamin L., born about 1841;

G) John, about circa 1844; H) George A., born about 1846, may have died before 1860;

5) Solomon (Jr.), moved to Illinois.

Henry W. Royse [or Rouse] married Sarah A. Martin 15 July 1849 in Adair, by Knifley.

Nancy Royse married C.W. Sparks 5 October 1865 at Sarah Royse’s in Adair.
